Brazil's Meat Exports Dip Slightly to $12.2 Billion in 2023

In 2023, approx. 3.1M tons of meat were exported from Brazil; surging by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, exports showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, meat exports dropped to $12.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Exports by Country

China (1.6M tons) was the main destination for meat exports from Brazil, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, meat exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Chile (186K tons), eightfold. the Philippines (162K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +81.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+8.9% per year) and the Philippines (+28.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($6.6B) remains the key foreign market for meat exports from Brazil, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Chile ($679M), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 4.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to China totaled +90.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Chile (+5.4% per year) and the United States (+100.8% per year).

Exports by Type

Beef (cattle meat) (2M tons), pork (1.1M tons) and horse, mule and donkey meat (2.6K tons) were the main products of meat exports from Brazil, together accounting for 99.9% of total exports. Lamb and sheep meat, meat of camels and other animals and goat meat lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further less than 0.1%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by lamb and sheep meat (with a CAGR of +217.5%), while the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, beef (cattle meat) ($9.5B) remains the largest type of meat exported from Brazil, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by pork ($2.6B), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by horse, mule and donkey meat, with a 0.1% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of beef (cattle meat) exports amounted to +5.9%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: pork (+8.0% per year) and horse, mule and donkey meat (+7.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the meat price stood at $3,916 per ton (FOB, Brazil), which is down by -17.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 when the average export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $4,728 per ton, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iran ($17,706 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($2,418 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
