October 2023 Sees a Decline in Canada's Hand Tools Import to $70M.

Canada Hand Tools Imports

In October 2023, overseas purchases of hand tools increased by 1.2% to 1.1K tons, rising for the third consecutive month after four months of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 with an increase of 45% against the previous month.

In value terms, hand tools imports contracted to $70M (IndexBox estimates) in October 2023. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports by Country

China (430 tons), the United States (330 tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (60 tons) were the main suppliers of hand tools imports to Canada, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Germany, Japan, Mexico and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.9%.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in Mexico (with a CAGR of +3.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest hand tools suppliers to Canada were the United States ($24M), China ($23M) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($7.8M), with a combined 77% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Japan, Germany, Vietnam and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 10%.

Japan, with a CAGR of +0.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports by Type

Agriculture or forestry hand tools (522 tons), hand saws (484 tons) and sets of two or more tools (108 tons) were the main products of hand tools imports to Canada, together comprising 98% of total imports. Files, pliers, pincers, tweezers, metal cutting shears and similar hand tools, drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools and hand-operated spanners and wrenches lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 1.8%.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the biggest increases were in drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the most traded types of hand tools in Canada were drilling or threading hand tools, household hand tools, screwdrivers, hammers and similar hand tools ($27M), hand-operated spanners and wrenches ($14M) and hand saws ($14M), together comprising 77% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In October 2023, the hand tools price stood at $61,966 per ton (CIF, Canada), declining by -9.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from October 2022 to October 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on October 2023 figures, hand tools import price decreased by -9.4% against September 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 57% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $77,621 per ton. From December 2022 to October 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($129K per ton), while the price for Sweden ($17,803 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
