South Africa Coffee Substitutes Exports

In 2023, shipments abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 55% to 1.2K tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +62.1% against 2021 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, coffee substitutes exports skyrocketed to $5.9M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports recorded a resilient increase. Exports by Country

Namibia (774 tons) was the main destination for coffee substitutes exports from South Africa, with a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee substitutes exports to Namibia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Botswana (259 tons), threefold. Democratic Republic of the Congo (28 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.3% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Namibia stood at +5.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+4.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.7% per year).

In value terms, Namibia ($4.3M) remains the key foreign market for coffee substitutes containing coffee exports from South Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($789K), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 2.6% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Namibia stood at +7.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+4.3% per year) and Malawi (-0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the coffee substitutes price stood at $4,965 per ton (FOB, South Africa), dropping by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $5,114 per ton in 2022, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($9,128 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($3,050 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
