Which Country Eats the Most Tomatoes in the World?

Global tomato consumption amounted to 172,059 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +1.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global tomato consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +10% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global tomato consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Tomatoes Consumption

With nearly 54,888 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading tomato consuming country, mixed up 31% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (18,435 thousand tonnes) and the United States (14,736 thousand tonnes), with a share of 11% and 8%, respectively. Moreover, tomato consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India threefold. They were followed by Turkey with a 7% of global consumption share and Egypt with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of tomato consumption in China stood at +5.4%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+8.0% per year) and the United States (+0.5% per year).

The highest levels of tomato per capita consumption was registered in Turkey (147.87 kg/year), followed by Egypt (87.48 kg/year), the United States (45.80 kg/year), China (39.00 kg/year) and India (14.06 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of tomato was estimated at 15.83 kg/year in 2015.

In India, per capita tomato consumption has grown noticably (+6.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, India per capita consumption reached 147.87 kg/year as compared with 8.46 kg/year in 2007.
