Banana and Plantain Price in Brazil (FOB) - 2023
The average banana and plantain export price stood at $496 per ton in October 2023, approximately mirroring the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 an increase of 18% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $587 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to October 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($706 per ton), while the average price for exports to Egypt ($386 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Banana and Plantain Price in Brazil (CIF) - 2022
The average banana and plantain import price stood at $3,748 per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 58% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $12,150 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($4,989 per ton), while the price for the Philippines totaled $3,012 per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+2.2%).
Banana and Plantain Exports in Brazil
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of bananas and plantains, when their volume decreased by -22.4% to 84K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 109K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports stood at $37M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Banana and Plantain Imports in Brazil
In 2022, supplies from abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by -16.4% to 37 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 79 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports contracted to $138K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 4.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $199K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
