Banana Price in China (CIF) - 2023
The average banana import price stood at $583 per ton in November 2023, falling by -1.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 4.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $659 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to November 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Ecuador ($637 per ton) and Cambodia ($611 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($469 per ton) and the Philippines ($604 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (-0.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Banana Price in China (FOB) - 2023
The average banana export price stood at $1,252 per ton in November 2023, increasing by 7.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from December 2022 to November 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last eleven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on November 2023 figures, banana export price increased by +59.9% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 38% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in November 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($1,050 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($418 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana Imports in China
Banana imports into China declined slightly to 1.8M tons in 2022, reducing by -2.7% against the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 5.5% against the previous year.
In value terms, banana imports expanded remarkably to $1.2B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
