Banana Price in Latvia (CIF) - 2023
In October 2023, the average banana import price amounted to $992 per ton, picking up by 3.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 an increase of 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,160 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to October 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In October 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Lithuania ($1,064 per ton) and Germany ($1,017 per ton), while the price for Belgium ($876 per ton) and France ($979 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana Price in Latvia (FOB) - 2023
In October 2023, the average banana export price amounted to $1,120 per ton, growing by 8.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 16% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,310 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to October 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In October 2023, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($1,133 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania totaled $1,097 per ton.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+0.8%).
Banana Imports in Latvia
In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas decreased by -9% to 43K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 47K tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, banana imports rose rapidly to $38M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
