Bread and Bakery Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average bread and bakery export price stood at $2,149 per ton in 2022, surging by 8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 20%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($2,870 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lesotho ($1,520 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average bread and bakery import price stood at $2,138 per ton in 2022, surging by 11% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible decrease. The import price peaked at $2,769 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,940 per ton), while the price for Lesotho ($470 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
