Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at 10M tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by mild growth of the number of producing animals and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin production reduced to $8.4B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 725% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $119.7B. From 2019 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (1.7M tons), the United States (1.1M tons) and India (1.1M tons), together comprising 39% of global production. Brazil, Argentina, Pakistan, Mexico, Australia, Russia and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +5.9%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Yield
The global average cattle hide and skin yield reduced to 29 kg per head in 2022, stabilizing at 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 3.4%. The global yield peaked at 29 kg per head in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Producing Animals
In 2022, global number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production reduced slightly to 359M heads, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the number of producing animals increased by 2.3% against the previous year. As a result, the number of producing animals reached the peak level of 363M heads. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of this number remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports
World Imports of Raw Hides And Skins of Cattle
In 2022, purchases abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 5.6% to 2.6M tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 6.5%. Global imports peaked at 2.9M tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports rose slightly to $3.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $6.9B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports By Country
China was the major importer of raw hides and skins of cattle in the world, with the volume of imports finishing at 1.1M tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Italy (356K tons) and Turkey (128K tons), together committing a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Germany (100K tons), South Korea (97K tons), Nigeria (86K tons), Thailand (74K tons), Spain (64K tons), Austria (58K tons), the Netherlands (58K tons) and Brazil (47K tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of raw hides and skins of cattle. At the same time, Nigeria (+58.3%), Brazil (+43.3%), Turkey (+12.6%) and Spain (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +58.3% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.1%), the Netherlands (-1.9%), Germany (-3.0%), Austria (-3.5%) and South Korea (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Nigeria, China and Brazil increased by +3.6, +3.3, +2.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest cattle hide and skin importing markets worldwide were China ($1.2B), Italy ($659M) and Germany ($141M), with a combined 62% share of global imports. South Korea, Nigeria, Turkey, Thailand, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +56.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average cattle hide and skin import price amounted to $1,299 per ton, declining by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $2,585 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,851 per ton), while Turkey ($718 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports
World Exports of Raw Hides And Skins of Cattle
In 2022, shipments abroad of raw hides and skins of cattle increased by 0.5% to 2.4M tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 14%. The global exports peaked at 2.9M tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports fell slightly to $3.1B in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $6.7B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports By Country
The United States was the largest exporter of raw hides and skins of cattle in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to 665K tons, which was near 27% of total exports in 2022. Germany (139K tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Italy (131K tons), France (124K tons), Canada (116K tons) and Australia (116K tons). All these countries together held near 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Argentina (87K tons), the Netherlands (73K tons), Ireland (72K tons), the UK (71K tons), Austria (64K tons), Spain (59K tons) and Poland (53K tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin exports from the United States stood at -3.7%. At the same time, Argentina (+93.0%), Poland (+3.2%), Ireland (+2.2%) and the UK (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +93.0% from 2012-2022. Italy, Austria, Spain and France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Canada (-1.4%), Germany (-1.8%), Australia (-5.5%) and the Netherlands (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Argentina (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the Netherlands, Australia and the United States saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.5% and -7.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($978M) remains the largest cattle hide and skin supplier worldwide, comprising 32% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($207M), with a 6.7% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.6% share.
In the United States, cattle hide and skin exports plunged by an average annual rate of -7.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: France (-5.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.5% per year).
Export Prices By Country
The average cattle hide and skin export price stood at $1,267 per ton in 2022, waning by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $2,545 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,381 per ton), while Argentina ($630 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
