Coal Price in Mexico (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average coal import price amounted to $403 per ton, increasing by 5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($681 per ton), while the price for Colombia ($251 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coal Price in Mexico (FOB) - 2022
The average coal export price stood at $210 per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $340 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($460 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($144 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+181.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Coal Imports in Mexico
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of coal increased by 58% to 270K tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a sharp reduction.
In value terms, coal imports soared to $109M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous contraction.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 733% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coal exports skyrocketed to $469K in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a significant expansion.
