Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the consumption volume increased by 8.5%. Over the period under review, global consumption reached the peak volume at 3.5M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The global common pottery market value rose slightly to $9.7B in 2022, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (820K tons), the United States (483K tons) and India (302K tons), with a combined 48% share of global consumption. Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Japan, the UK, Germany, Portugal, France and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the key consuming countries, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest common pottery markets worldwide were China ($2.2B), the United States ($1.4B) and India ($673M), with a combined 44% share of the global market. Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Mexico, the UK, Germany, Bangladesh, Brazil, France and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +10.2%, saw the highest growth rate of market size in terms of the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

World Production of Common Pottery

In 2022, the amount of common pottery produced worldwide dropped slightly to 2.6M tons, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, production continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum volume at 2.8M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery production contracted modestly to $7.6B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $8.2B. From 2017 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of common pottery production was China (1M tons), comprising approx. 39% of total volume. Moreover, common pottery production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (305K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Portugal (162K tons), with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+0.9% per year) and Portugal (+3.6% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Common Pottery

In 2022, the amount of common pottery imported worldwide contracted modestly to 1.4M tons, waning by -2.5% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1.5M tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, common pottery imports rose remarkably to $4.4B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

The United States was the main importing country with an import of about 480K tons, which recorded 33% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Germany (92K tons) and the UK (67K tons), together creating an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - France (65K tons), the Netherlands (61K tons), Italy (38K tons), Canada (37K tons), Mexico (37K tons), Spain (36K tons), Poland (30K tons), Belgium (27K tons), South Africa (26K tons) and Australia (22K tons) - together made up 26% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to common pottery imports into the United States stood at +6.5%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+10.4%), Poland (+5.0%), Spain (+4.7%), Germany (+3.9%), Italy (+3.4%), Mexico (+3.0%) and Belgium (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2022. Australia, France, the UK and South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Canada (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States and the Netherlands increased by +10 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($1.3B) constitutes the largest market for imported common pottery worldwide, comprising 30% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($339M), with a 7.7% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.4% share.

In the United States, common pottery imports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+7.5% per year) and the UK (+2.9% per year).

Import Prices By Country

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 714K tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, common pottery exports fell to $2.6B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +27.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $2.6B, leveling off in the following year.

Exports By Country

In 2022, China (185K tons), distantly followed by Portugal (103K tons), the Netherlands (55K tons), Thailand (36K tons) and Turkey (31K tons) were the largest exporters of common pottery, together constituting 61% of total exports. The following exporters - Romania (23K tons), Germany (23K tons), Italy (19K tons), Spain (16K tons), Poland (14K tons), Mexico (14K tons), the UK (14K tons) and India (13K tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($637M) remains the largest common pottery supplier worldwide, comprising 24% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($298M), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +12.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+9.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+15.2% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average common pottery export price amounted to $3,891 per ton, rising by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($8,696 per ton), while Romania ($1,841 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
