Consumption By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were China (73K tons), the United States (50K tons) and India (30K tons), together comprising 45% of global consumption. Japan, Pakistan, Russia, Nigeria, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Italy, Turkey and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($745M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($324M). It was followed by China.
In the United States, the garden tool market increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Japan (-3.0% per year) and China (+2.5% per year).
The countries with the highest levels of garden tool per capita consumption in 2022 were Saudi Arabia (169 kg per 1000 persons), the United States (150 kg per 1000 persons) and Italy (142 kg per 1000 persons).

After two years of growth, production of garden tools decreased by -8.1% to 332K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 361K tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, garden tool production reduced to $2B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $2.2B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
China (102K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of garden tool production, comprising approx. 31% of total volume. Moreover, garden tool production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (33K tons), threefold. The United States (26K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.8% share.
In China, garden tool production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (-0.1% per year) and the United States (-5.5% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Garden Tools
In 2022, overseas purchases of garden tools decreased by -0.8% to 89K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 90K tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, garden tool imports reached $549M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports By Country
In 2022, the United States (25K tons) was the main importer of garden tools, achieving 29% of total imports. Germany (6.4K tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the UK (5.5K tons) and France (4.3K tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total imports. The Netherlands (3.9K tons), Poland (2.9K tons), Spain (2K tons), Japan (1.9K tons), Canada (1.7K tons), Australia (1.5K tons), the Czech Republic (1.5K tons) and Belgium (1.4K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United States was also the fastest-growing in terms of the garden tools imports, with a CAGR of +12.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+12.1%), Spain (+10.7%), the Netherlands (+5.7%), the Czech Republic (+3.7%), Germany (+3.4%), France (+2.8%), Canada (+2.6%) and the UK (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Australia (-1.3%), Japan (-1.4%) and Belgium (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+17 p.p.) and Poland (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($125M) constitutes the largest market for imported garden tools worldwide, comprising 23% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($56M), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.2% share.
In the United States, garden tool imports increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+6.3% per year) and the UK (+3.7% per year).
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average garden tool import price amounted to $6,171 per ton, increasing by 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 8.4% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $6,311 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($8,800 per ton), while the United States ($4,943 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports
World Exports of Garden Tools
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of garden tools, when their volume decreased by -9.3% to 78K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 86K tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, garden tool exports contracted to $511M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 35%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $547M, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports By Country
China was the largest exporter of garden tools in the world, with the volume of exports accounting for 29K tons, which was near 38% of total exports in 2022. Germany (8.7K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (7.1%) and India (4.6%). The following exporters - Brazil (3.5K tons), the Netherlands (3K tons), Poland (2.5K tons), Spain (2.5K tons), Mexico (2.4K tons), Vietnam (2K tons), Austria (1.4K tons), the Czech Republic (1.3K tons) and France (1.2K tons) - together made up 25% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garden tool exports from China stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Brazil (+18.8%), Vietnam (+15.2%), Germany (+15.1%), Spain (+10.9%), Poland (+10.5%), the Czech Republic (+10.4%), Mexico (+8.9%), the Netherlands (+1.6%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Austria (-3.0%), India (-5.4%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Brazil, Spain, Vietnam, Poland, Austria and Mexico increased by +7.9, +3.5, +1.9, +1.8, +1.8, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($149M) remains the largest garden tool supplier worldwide, comprising 29% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($55M), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 10% share.
In China, garden tool exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+10.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.8% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average garden tool export price amounted to $6,512 per ton, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 9.8%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($12,619 per ton), while India ($2,598 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
