The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 1.2M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by slight growth of the harvested area and a pronounced reduction in yield figures.
In value terms, hazelnut production amounted to $3.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -0.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 41%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $4.8B. From 2016 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
Turkey (675K tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country worldwide, accounting for 60% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Italy (113K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (63K tons), with a 5.6% share.
In Turkey, hazelnut production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+2.8% per year) and the United States (+5.9% per year).
Yield
The global average hazelnut yield stood at 1.1 tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 32%. The global yield peaked at 1.6 tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Harvested Area
The global hazelnut harvested area fell to 1M ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hazelnut harvested area increased by +70.3% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production reached the peak figure at 1M ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports
World Imports of Hazelnuts
In 2022, the amount of hazelnuts imported worldwide rose sharply to 46K tons, increasing by 6.1% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 69%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, hazelnut imports declined sharply to $134M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 62% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $172M in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Imports By Country
In 2022, China (16K tons), distantly followed by Italy (9.9K tons) and Thailand (5.2K tons) represented the key importers of hazelnuts, together achieving 68% of total imports. The following importers - Canada (1.7K tons), Hong Kong SAR (1.7K tons), Germany (1.6K tons), Spain (1.2K tons), Russia (1K tons) and Uzbekistan (1K tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +216.9%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($43M), Italy ($29M) and Canada ($14M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of global imports. Germany, Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Spain, Russia and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +147.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average hazelnut import price amounted to $2,898 per ton, declining by -26.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $5,498 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($8,019 per ton), while Thailand ($1,009 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports
World Exports of Hazelnuts
In 2022, approx. 40K tons of hazelnuts were exported worldwide; falling by -19.1% compared with 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at 67K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hazelnut exports contracted remarkably to $135M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $212M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
The United States was the largest exporting country with an export of about 20K tons, which reached 49% of total exports. Georgia (5.8K tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (2.9K tons), Spain (2.3K tons) and Poland (1.9K tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total exports. Azerbaijan (1.7K tons) and Timor-Leste (1K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from the United States stood at -4.6%. At the same time, Timor-Leste (+97.2%), Poland (+38.6%), Azerbaijan (+35.6%), Spain (+27.8%) and Georgia (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Timor-Leste emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +97.2% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Georgia (+11 p.p.), Spain (+5.5 p.p.), Poland (+4.7 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+4 p.p.), France (+2.9 p.p.), Timor-Leste (+2.4 p.p.) and the United States (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($67M) remains the largest hazelnut supplier worldwide, comprising 50% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Georgia ($16M), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 10% share.
In the United States, hazelnut exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Georgia (+13.4% per year) and Spain (+35.4% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average hazelnut export price amounted to $3,346 per ton, falling by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $3,933 per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,907 per ton), while Timor-Leste ($224 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
