Honey Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023

The average honey import price stood at $3,244 per ton in September 2023, waning by -2.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 16% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $3,983 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($27,707 per ton), while the price for China ($1,870 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Honey Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average honey export price amounted to $13,767 per ton, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, honey export price decreased by -29.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked at $19,600 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($47,640 per ton), while the average price for exports to Macao SAR ($3,057 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Honey Imports in Japan

Honey imports into Japan stood at 47K tons in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 49K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, honey imports fell slightly to $168M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $174M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Honey Exports in Japan

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of honey, when their volume decreased by -41.8% to 20 tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 35 tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, honey exports shrank sharply to $280K in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 38%.
