Lactose Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average lactose import price amounted to $1,592 per ton, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,976 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Australia ($1,848 per ton) and the Netherlands ($1,731 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,531 per ton) and Germany ($1,655 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In September 2023, the average lactose export price amounted to $1,144 per ton, growing by 3.3% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 24% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,364 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,847 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($961 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
