Maize Price in Egypt (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $346 per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +56.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 94% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $410 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the United States ($349 per ton) and Argentina ($345 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($345 per ton) and Ukraine ($345 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Price in Egypt (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average maize export price amounted to $668 per ton, jumping by 110% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 163% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,113 per ton. From May 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Albania ($293 per ton), while the average price for exports to Palestine ($293 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Yemen (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Imports in Egypt
In 2022, overseas purchases of maize decreased by -12.8% to 7.2M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 8.5M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize imports expanded modestly to $2.5B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Maize Exports in Egypt
In 2022, overseas shipments of maize decreased by -48.1% to 3.5K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 8.5K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize exports reduced dramatically to $1.3M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $2.6M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
