Mechanical Wood Pulp Price in Norway (FOB) - 2023
The average mechanical wood pulp export price stood at $591 per ton in August 2023, remaining stable against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 11% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $752 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Africa ($656 per ton) and Italy ($635 per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($455 per ton) and Germany ($546 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mechanical Wood Pulp Price in Norway (CIF) - 2022
The average mechanical wood pulp import price stood at $608 per ton in 2022, waning by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $938 per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($911 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($489 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Mechanical Wood Pulp Exports in Norway
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of mechanical wood pulp, when their volume decreased by -16.2% to 69K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 82K tons, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
In value terms, mechanical wood pulp exports expanded notably to $39M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +46.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
