The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Guatemala (53K tons), India (44K tons) and Indonesia (41K tons), with a combined 76% share of global production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Yield

In 2022, the global average yield of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms amounted to 385 kg per ha, picking up by 10% compared with the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, the average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price amounted to $10,715 per ton, with a decrease of -12.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $14,187 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Nepal and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +47.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price stood at $8,301 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -28.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $13,714 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($14,058 per ton), while Indonesia ($6,544 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
