The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by perceptible growth of the harvested area and a noticeable increase in yield figures.
In value terms, pimenta pepper production shrank to $12.2B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +56.2% against 2014 indices. India (1.9M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pimenta pepper production, accounting for 37% of total volume. Moreover, pimenta pepper production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (625K tons), threefold. Ethiopia (329K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6.5% share.
In India, pimenta pepper production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Bangladesh (+17.4% per year) and Ethiopia (+7.6% per year).
Yield
In 2022, the global average pimenta pepper yield reached 2.9 tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The global yield peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports amounted to $2.7B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Imports By Country
The United States (176K tons) and China (135K tons) were the largest importers of pimenta pepper in 2022, amounting to near 18% and 14% of total imports, respectively. Thailand (83K tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Spain (71K tons), Malaysia (51K tons), Indonesia (48K tons) and Sri Lanka (48K tons). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total imports. Bangladesh (33K tons), Mexico (31K tons), Germany (26K tons), the UK (16K tons), the Netherlands (15K tons) and Japan (15K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($476M), China ($349M) and Thailand ($215M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 38% of global imports.
China, with a CAGR of +28.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average pimenta pepper import price amounted to $2,794 per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,967 per ton), while Bangladesh ($2,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

India represented the key exporting country with an export of about 406K tons, which recorded 43% of total exports. China (249K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Spain (8.7%) and Peru (4.6%). Mexico (40K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($1.1B), China ($705M) and Spain ($272M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of global exports. Peru and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.8%.

The average pimenta pepper export price stood at $2,841 per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($3,287 per ton), while Mexico ($1,829 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
