In 2022, the average import price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses amounted to $0.6 per cubic meter, dropping by -17.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 23%. The import price peaked at $1.1 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($0.8 per cubic meter), while the price for Singapore ($0.4 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average export price for hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses amounted to $2.3 per cubic meter, increasing by 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($3 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Somalia ($0.5 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Hydrogen, Rare Gases and Other Non-Metals in Kenya

In 2022, the amount of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses imported into Kenya reduced rapidly to 3.6M cubic meters, dropping by -27% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 90%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 5M cubic meters, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metalses declined notably to $2.2M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $3.7M, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
