The average import price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms stood at $4,660 per ton in September 2023, falling by -23.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $6,153 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($9,177 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,121 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2023 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average export price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms amounted to $3,073 per ton, which is down by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms increased by +97.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 105%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $3,192 per ton, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($7,156 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($1,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 19K tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, imports of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms expanded to $84M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
