Rice Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

The average rice export price stood at $764 per ton in September 2023, shrinking by -19.7% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 25% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $1,022 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,672 per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($410 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Haiti (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average rice import price stood at $913 per ton in September 2023, which is down by -13.9% against the previous month. Over the period from September 2022 to September 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,086 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($2,226 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($433 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+16.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Exports in the United States

In 2022, exports of rice from the United States dropped remarkably to 2.5M tons, which is down by -26.5% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year.

In value terms, rice exports dropped to $1.7B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 2.7%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.9B, and then dropped in the following year.

As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
