Rye Price in Germany (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average rye import price amounted to $273 per ton, surging by 11% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The import price peaked at $339 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($1,435 per ton), while the price for Poland ($229 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+13.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Rye Price in Germany (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average rye export price amounted to $300 per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $335 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($451 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($215 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Rye Imports in Germany
In 2022, purchases abroad of rye decreased by -53.8% to 354K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 911K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, rye imports declined dramatically to $117M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 63% against the previous year.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +28.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 381K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, rye exports expanded modestly to $99M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +45.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
