Consumption By Country
The country with the largest volume of smoked herring consumption was China (25K tons), accounting for 23% of total volume. Moreover, smoked herring consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the United States (12K tons), twofold. India (9.2K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to -5.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: the United States (-1.8% per year) and India (-4.9% per year).
In value terms, China ($86M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($40M). It was followed by the United States.
In China, the smoked herring market decreased by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (-3.1% per year) and the United States (-1.5% per year).

Production
World Production of Smoked Herrings
After nine years of decline, production of smoked herrings increased by 6.6% to 106K tons in 2022. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Global production peaked at 226K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, smoked herring production expanded to $414M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 33%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $788M. From 2016 to 2022, global production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (26K tons), Canada (16K tons) and the United States (10K tons), with a combined 49% share of global production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Canada (with a CAGR of +0.5%), while production for the other global leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.
Imports
World Imports of Smoked Herrings
In 2022, supplies from abroad of smoked herrings decreased by -15.8% to 18K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at 26K tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, smoked herring imports amounted to $75M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports By Country
The Dominican Republic (7K tons) and France (4.7K tons) represented roughly 66% of total imports in 2022. Haiti (1.5K tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the United States (1.5K tons). All these countries together held near 17% share of total imports. The following importers - Trinidad and Tobago (506 tons), Italy (472 tons) and Germany (356 tons) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($35M) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked herrings worldwide, comprising 46% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($12M), with a 15% share of global imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 12% share.
In the Dominican Republic, smoked herring imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+4.5% per year) and the United States (+6.9% per year).
Import Prices By Country
The average smoked herring import price stood at $4,246 per ton in 2022, growing by 25% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6,167 per ton), while France ($2,438 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports By Country
Canada prevails in exports structure, reaching 13K tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (1.5K tons) and China (1K tons), together generating a 14% share of total exports. The Netherlands (544 tons) and Lithuania (294 tons) held a little share of total exports.
Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of smoked herrings. At the same time, China (+165.9%) and Belarus (+58.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Canada stood at +4.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+185.0% per year) and Belarus (+46.4% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average smoked herring export price amounted to $3,695 per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 15%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
