Twine and Cordage Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average twine and cordage export price amounted to $3,795 per ton, surging by 5.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 8.9% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $4,758 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($6,321 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($2,161 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Twine and Cordage Price in China (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average twine and cordage import price amounted to $16,750 per ton, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, twine and cordage import price increased by +58.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($54,483 per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($1,593 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+20.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Twine and Cordage Exports in China
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables, when their volume decreased by -3% to 250K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 257K tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, twine and cordage exports contracted slightly to $1B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +11.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.1B, leveling off in the following year.

Twine and Cordage Imports in China
For the third consecutive year, China recorded decline in purchases abroad of twine, cordage, rope and cables, which decreased by -9.4% to 4.9K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. The smallest decline of -5% was in 2021.
In value terms, twine and cordage imports reached $82M in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
