Watermelon Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average watermelon import price stood at $250 per ton in September 2023, increasing by 3.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 85% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $634 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($789 per ton), while the price for Mexico stood at $230 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Watermelon Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average watermelon export price stood at $654 per ton in September 2023, surging by 5.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $985 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Canada.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Canada amounted to -0.6% per month.
Watermelon Imports in the United States
In 2022, the amount of watermelons imported into the United States dropped slightly to 801K tons, remaining constant against the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 7.8%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 811K tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, watermelon imports rose markedly to $393M in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 8.4%.

Watermelon Exports in the United States
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of watermelons, when their volume decreased by -16.1% to 213K tons. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 254K tons, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, watermelon exports reduced to $138M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $154M, and then dropped in the following year.
