The ASEAN dry bean market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2023, after seven years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Dry Bean Production in ASEAN
In value terms, dry bean production dropped slightly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The country with the largest volume of dry bean production was Myanmar (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, dry bean production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), more than tenfold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
In Myanmar, dry bean production plunged by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Indonesia (X% per year) and Vietnam (X% per year).
In 2023, the average dry bean yield in ASEAN reached X kg per ha, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2023, the total area harvested in terms of beans (dry) production in ASEAN expanded to X ha, with an increase of X% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in ASEAN
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of beans (dry) decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, exports, however, recorded a modest increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, dry bean exports declined slightly to $X in 2023. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Myanmar dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. The following exporters - Thailand (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.
Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of beans (dry). At the same time, Thailand (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ASEAN, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Indonesia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest dry bean supplier in ASEAN, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Myanmar was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (X% per year) and Indonesia (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in ASEAN stood at $X per ton in 2023, picking up by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Dry Bean Imports
Imports in ASEAN
In 2023, the amount of beans (dry) imported in ASEAN expanded rapidly to X tons, with an increase of X% compared with 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dry bean imports totaled $X in 2023. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. The level of import peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of dry bean imports in 2023 were Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together reaching X% of total import. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), generating a X% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2022, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
