Potato Market Size in MENA

In 2023, the MENA's potato market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Potato Production in MENA

In value terms, potato production shrank to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Egypt (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Algeria (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production. Iran, Morocco, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Lebanon (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average potato yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2023, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2023, the potato harvested area in MENA totaled X ha, standing approx. at 2022. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Potato Exports

Exports in MENA

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of potatoes, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports expanded markedly to $X in 2023. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached X% of total exports. Iran (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Israel (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Turkey (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) - each amounted to an X% share of total exports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the potatoes exports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Iran (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Syrian Arab Republic (X%), Israel (X%), Turkey (X%) and Lebanon (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Egypt (X p.p.) and Iran (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2023, the share of Syrian Arab Republic (X p.p.), Turkey (X p.p.), Lebanon (X p.p.) and Israel (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest potato supplier in MENA, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Israel ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Iran, with a X% share.

In Egypt, potato exports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Israel (X% per year) and Iran (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2023, growing by X% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, potato export price increased by X% against 2019 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of potatoes decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2023, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), Oman (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kuwait (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) represented the key importers of potatoes, together achieving X% of total imports.
