In 2023, the harvested area of chilies and peppers (green) in Serbia reached X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X%. For the third consecutive year, Serbia recorded decline in shipments abroad of chilies and peppers (green), which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chili and pepper exports declined to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) were the main destinations of chili and pepper exports from Serbia, together comprising X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Croatia ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for chili and pepper exported from Serbia worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports. Overall, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, chili and pepper export price increased by X% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Serbia

Chili and pepper imports into Serbia surged to X tons in 2023, with an increase of X% on the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, chili and pepper imports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. In general, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2023, North Macedonia (X tons) constituted the largest chili and pepper supplier to Serbia, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, chili and pepper imports from North Macedonia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Albania (X tons), twofold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
