Lentil Market Size in Western Africa

After three years of growth, the West African lentil market decreased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Lentil Production in Western Africa

Exports in Western Africa

In 2023, overseas shipments of lentils increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, lentil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an X% share, followed by Sierra Leone (X%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to lentil exports from Nigeria stood at X%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Gambia (X%) and Ghana (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Sierra Leone (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (X p.p.), Ghana (X p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (X p.p.) and Gambia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2023, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of lentils, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, lentil imports declined to $X in 2023. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Niger was the largest importer of lentils in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Cabo Verde (X%). Burkina Faso (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Niger increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Togo (X%), Senegal (X%) and Cabo Verde (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Burkina Faso (X%), Mauritania (X%) and Sierra Leone (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
