Brazil Turkey Meat Exports

In 2023, shipments abroad of turkey meat increased by 9% to 62K tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The exports peaked at 93K tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat exports declined to $166M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by 97%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $192M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.Brazil Turkey Meat Exports By Country (Million USD)

Exports by Country

Mexico (15K tons), South Africa (13K tons) and the Netherlands (5.7K tons) were the main destinations of turkey meat exports from Brazil, together comprising 54% of total exports. Peru, Chile, Benin, the Dominican Republic, Angola and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +80.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($56M) remains the key foreign market for turkey meat exports from Brazil, comprising 34% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($26M), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 12% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Mexico totaled +28.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+3.3% per year) and South Africa (-4.0% per year).

Exports by Type

Frozen turkey cuts (57K tons) was the largest type of turkey meat exported from Brazil, with a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen turkey cuts exceeded the volume of the second product type, frozen whole turkeys (4.7K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by fresh or chilled turkey cuts (27 tons), with less than 0.1% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of frozen turkey cuts exports totaled -4.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: frozen whole turkeys (+25.2% per year) and fresh or chilled turkey cuts (+295.2% per year).

In value terms, frozen turkey cuts ($155M) remains the largest type of turkey meat exported from Brazil, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen whole turkeys ($11M), with a 6.9% share of total exports. It was followed by fresh or chilled whole turkeys, with less than 0.1% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of frozen turkey cuts exports totaled -2.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: frozen whole turkeys (+29.1% per year) and fresh or chilled whole turkeys (+169.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the turkey meat price stood at $2,673 per ton (FOB, Brazil), with a decrease of -16.9% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, turkey meat export price increased by +57.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $3,218 per ton, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,453 per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($837 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Peru (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
