France Frozen Fish and Seafood Imports

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of frozen fish and seafood decreased by -11.9% to 396K tons in 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 7.7%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 449K tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, frozen fish and seafood imports declined to $2.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 14%. Imports by Country

China (39K tons), Spain (36K tons) and Ecuador (33K tons) were the main suppliers of frozen fish and seafood imports to France, together comprising 27% of total imports. the Netherlands, the United States, Belgium, the UK and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen fish and seafood suppliers to France were Spain ($226M), the Netherlands ($210M) and Belgium ($206M), with a combined 25% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Belgium, with a CAGR of +18.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Frozen fish fillet (136K tons), frozen crustaceans (125K tons) and frozen whole fish (62K tons) were the main products of frozen fish and seafood imports to France, with a combined 82% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for frozen crustaceans (with a CAGR of +2.0%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, frozen fish and seafood with the largest imports in France were frozen crustaceans ($992M), frozen fish fillet ($934M) and molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) ($313M), together comprising 87% of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the frozen fish and seafood price stood at $6,470 per ton (CIF, France), declining by -2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 7.6%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $6,624 per ton in 2022, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($10,311 per ton), while the price for Russia ($4,183 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
