Hong Kong Sees 7% Decline in Plastic Sanitary Ware Imports, Dropping to $7.8 Million in 2023

Hong Kong Plastic Sanitary Ware Imports

In 2023, supplies from abroad of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware decreased by -10.7% to 984K units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2M units. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic sanitary ware imports declined to $7.8M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (687K units) constituted the largest supplier of plastic sanitary ware to Hong Kong, with a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic sanitary ware imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (86K units), eightfold. Thailand (49K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+22.3% per year) and Thailand (+9.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($5.3M) constituted the largest supplier of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware to Hong Kong, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($519K), with a 6.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.8% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+16.4% per year) and Germany (-15.6% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2023, plastic lavatory seats and covers (791K units) constituted the largest type of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware supplied to Hong Kong, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic lavatory seats and covers exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns (184K units), fourfold.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of plastic lavatory seats and covers imports amounted to -2.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns (-12.7% per year) and plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins (-2.4% per year).

In value terms, plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware with the largest imports in Hong Kong were plastic lavatory seats and covers ($4.2M), plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns ($2.4M) and plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins ($1.2M).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the plastic sanitary ware price stood at $7.9 per unit (CIF, Hong Kong), surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $8.7 per unit. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($19 per unit), while the price for Thailand ($5.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
