Netherlands Dairy Produce Exports

For the third consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in shipments abroad of dairy produce, which increased by 13% to 3.2M tons in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 4.9M tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dairy produce exports amounted to $10.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $12.7B. Exports by Country

Belgium (934K tons), Germany (730K tons) and France (312K tons) were the main destinations of dairy produce exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 62% share of total exports. Spain, Greece, Italy and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for dairy produce exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($2.9B), Belgium ($1.8B) and France ($1.4B), together accounting for 57% of total exports. Spain, Italy, the UK and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +14.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Cheese (1.1M tons), whole fresh milk (663K tons) and evaporated and condensed milk (334K tons) were the main products of dairy produce exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Powdered milk, butter and dairy spreads, cream fresh, skim milk, yoghurt and fermented milk and ghee lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for skim milk (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, cheese ($5.5B) remains the largest type of dairy produce exported from the Netherlands, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by butter and dairy spreads ($1.7B), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by powdered milk, with an 11% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of cheese exports amounted to +2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: butter and dairy spreads (-0.5% per year) and powdered milk (-7.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the dairy produce price stood at $3,419 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), declining by -11.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 21%. The export price peaked at $3,871 per ton in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($4,625 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($1,907 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
