Poland Witnesses An 81% Surge in Leek Imports, Reaching a Record $13M in 2023

Poland Leek Imports

In 2023, approx. 20K tons of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were imported into Poland; rising by 54% on the previous year. In general, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 110% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, leek imports skyrocketed to $13M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 112%. Imports by Country

In 2023, Belgium (12K tons) constituted the largest supplier of leek to Poland, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, leek imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (2.1K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (2K tons), with a 10% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium totaled +17.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (-7.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+7.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest leek suppliers to Poland were Belgium ($6.3M), the Netherlands ($3.4M) and Turkey ($1.6M), with a combined 84% share of total imports. Spain, Germany, France and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +18.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the leek price stood at $691 per ton (CIF, Poland), jumping by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $940 per ton. From 2020 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,718 per ton), while the price for Germany ($387 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
