South Africa Avocado Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of avocados increased by 13% to 71K tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +49.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 106% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 90K tons. From 2019 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, avocado exports surged to $144M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
the Netherlands (52K tons) was the main destination for avocado exports from South Africa, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (8.3K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Russia (2.7K tons), with a 3.8% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands totaled +5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-3.1% per year) and Russia (+17.7% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($104M) remains the key foreign market for avocados exports from South Africa, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($18M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 3.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands totaled +8.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-0.0% per year) and Russia (+22.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the avocado price amounted to $2,035 per ton (FOB, South Africa), increasing by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, avocado export price decreased by -2.2% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $2,080 per ton. From 2022 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,055 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($1,890 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
