Consumption

World Consumption of Strawberries

After six years of growth, consumption of strawberries decreased by -0.9% to 9.5M tons in 2023. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, global consumption attained the maximum volume at 9.6M tons in 2022, and then fell in the following year.

The global strawberry market size was estimated at $33B in 2023, growing by 3.1% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $33.8B. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.

Consumption By Country

China (3.3M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of strawberry consumption, comprising approx. 35% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the United States (1.4M tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (661K tons), with a 7% share.

In China, strawberry consumption increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2013-2023. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: the United States (-0.2% per year) and Turkey (+6.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($9.8B), the United States ($5.2B) and Japan ($3.4B) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2023, with a combined 56% share of the global market. Egypt, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Turkey, Brazil, Russia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +12.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of strawberry per capita consumption in 2023 were Turkey (7.7 kg per person), Egypt (5.8 kg per person) and Poland (5 kg per person).

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the leading consuming countries, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +8.4%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Production

World Production of Strawberries

After two years of growth, production of strawberries decreased by -1.2% to 9.5M tons in 2023. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak volume at 9.6M tons in 2022, and then fell slightly in the following year. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a pronounced increase of the harvested area and a slight expansion in yield figures.

In value terms, strawberry production amounted to $35B in 2023 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated resilient growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production decreased by -4.3% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $36.6B. From 2022 to 2023, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

China (3.3M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of strawberry production, accounting for 35% of total volume. Moreover, strawberry production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (1.2M tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Turkey (699K tons), with a 7.4% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in China stood at +3.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (-1.1% per year) and Turkey (+6.5% per year).

Yield

The global average strawberry yield declined slightly to 24 tons per ha in 2023, flattening at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 4%. The global yield peaked at 24 tons per ha in 2022, and then contracted in the following year.

Harvested Area

In 2023, the global strawberry harvested area shrank slightly to 394K ha, almost unchanged from 2022 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 5.6% against the previous year. The global harvested area peaked at 402K ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Imports

World Imports of Strawberries

Global strawberry imports fell to 1M tons in 2023, almost unchanged from 2022 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 8.8% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 1M tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.

In value terms, strawberry imports rose significantly to $4B in 2023. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +66.2% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

In 2023, the United States (267K tons), distantly followed by Germany (114K tons), Canada (108K tons), Russia (57K tons), the UK (57K tons) and France (54K tons) were the key importers of strawberries, together comprising 64% of total imports. The Netherlands (33K tons), Poland (28K tons), Belgium (27K tons), Mexico (26K tons), Italy (24K tons), Austria (20K tons) and Romania (17K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to strawberry imports into the United States stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Romania (+12.6%), Poland (+6.1%), Mexico (+4.8%), the UK (+2.0%) and the Netherlands (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2013-2023. Russia, Germany, Belgium and Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Canada (-1.3%), Italy (-4.1%) and France (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2013 to 2023, the share of the United States increased by +9.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($1.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported strawberries worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($449M), with an 11% share of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.5% share.

In the United States, strawberry imports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.6% over the period from 2013-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Canada (+2.5% per year) and Germany (+2.5% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2023, the average strawberry import price amounted to $3,927 per ton, picking up by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 10%. Global import price peaked in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($5,093 per ton), while Russia ($1,566 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

World Exports of Strawberries

Global strawberry exports shrank slightly to 977K tons in 2023, waning by -3.5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 14%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 1M tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry exports rose modestly to $3.6B in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +63.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Exports By Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of strawberries, namely Spain, Mexico and the United States, represented more than half of total export. Greece (78K tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8% share, followed by the Netherlands (6.1%). Turkey (38K tons), Belgium (36K tons), Egypt (25K tons), Poland (20K tons), Azerbaijan (19K tons) and Morocco (18K tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +100.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest strawberry supplying countries worldwide were Spain ($772M), Mexico ($749M) and the United States ($632M), together comprising 61% of global exports. The Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Poland and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Among the main exporting countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +94.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average strawberry export price stood at $3,640 per ton in 2023, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($5,817 per ton), while Turkey ($986 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
