This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Russia, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Germany, France, the UK, South Korea and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($344M), the United States ($294M) and Japan ($257M) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2023, with a combined 23% share of the global market. The UK, Germany, India, China, France, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Among the main consuming countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +14.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to market size over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of tooth brush per capita consumption in 2023 were Saudi Arabia (4.6 units per person), the United States (3.9 units per person) and Russia (3.6 units per person).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak volume at 12B units in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tooth brush production expanded slightly to $4.1B in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $4.3B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of tooth brush production was China (6.8B units), accounting for 59% of total volume. Moreover, tooth brush production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (899M units), eightfold. Germany (580M units) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +2.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+6.3% per year) and Germany (+6.5% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Tooth Brushes

In 2023, overseas purchases of tooth brushes decreased by -6.5% to 7.2B units for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 7.7B units, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, tooth brush imports contracted modestly to $3.1B in 2023. In general, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. In 2023, the United States (1.1B units), followed by Germany (727M units), Brazil (390M units) and China (386M units) were the largest importers of tooth brushes, together constituting 36% of total imports. Hungary, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2023, the average tooth brush import price amounted to $427 per thousand units, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2013 to 2023, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 6.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $454 per thousand units. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($708 per thousand units), while India ($64 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

World Exports of Tooth Brushes

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of tooth brushes decreased by -5.1% to 9.8B units in 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a moderate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 10B units in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, tooth brush exports totaled $3.1B in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +68.3% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports By Country

In 2023, China (6.3B units) represented the key exporter of tooth brushes, constituting 65% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (1.1B units), making up an 11% share of total exports. India (342M units), Switzerland (258M units), Thailand (210M units), Ireland (156M units) and Hungary (153M units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to tooth brush exports from China stood at +3.8%. At the same time, Hungary (+34.6%), Germany (+8.9%), India (+8.0%) and Thailand (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, China ($890M), Germany ($583M) and Switzerland ($203M) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together accounting for 54% of global exports. Hungary, India, Ireland and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.9%.

Among the main exporting countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +30.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average tooth brush export price stood at $315 per thousand units in 2023, with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, tooth brush export price decreased by -3.6% against 2021 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 57% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $524 per thousand units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($790 per thousand units), while China ($141 per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.
