Which Country Eats the Most Areca Nuts in the World?

Global areca nut consumption amounted to 1,162 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +5.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global areca nut consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012, when the output figure increased by +22% from the previous year level. In that year, the global areca nut consumption attained its maximum volume of 1,341 thousand tonnes. From 2013 to 2015, the total areca nut consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Areca Nuts Consumption

With nearly 578 thousand tonnes, India became the world’s leading areca nut consuming country, comprising 54% of global consumption. The other major consumers were China (121 thousand tonnes) and Myanmar (118 thousand tonnes), with a share of 11% and 11%, respectively. Moreover, areca nut consumption in India surpassed the figures recorded by China fivefold. They were followed by Indonesia with a 8% of global consumption share and Bangladesh with a 7% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of areca nut consumption in India stood at +2.3%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: China (-1.4% per year) and Myanmar (+2.3% per year).

The highest levels of areca nut per capita consumption was registered in Myanmar (2.18 kg/year), followed by Bangladesh (0.49 kg/year), India (0.44 kg/year), Indonesia (0.35 kg/year) and China (0.09 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of areca nut was estimated at 1.47 kg/year in 2015.

In Myanmar, per capita areca nut consumption has grown modestly (+1.5% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Myanmar per capita consumption reached 2.18 kg/year as compared with 1.94 kg/year in 2007.
