Global chestnut consumption amounted to 2,123 thousand tonnes in 2015, rising by +3.8% against the previous year level. Overall, the global chestnut consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +13% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global chestnut consumption attained its maximum volume of 2,177 thousand tonnes in 2013. From 2014 to 2015, the total chestnut consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Chestnuts Consumption

With nearly 1,651 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading chestnut consuming country, comprising 80% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Bolivia (89 thousand tonnes) and Italy (65 thousand tonnes), with a share of 4% and 3%, respectively. Moreover, chestnut consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Bolivia more than tenfold. They were followed by Turkey with a 3% of global consumption share and the Republic of Korea with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of chestnut consumption in China stood at +3.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Bolivia (+6.0% per year) and Italy (+6.9% per year).

The highest levels of chestnut per capita consumption was registered in Bolivia (8.33 kg/year), followed by China (1.17 kg/year), the Republic of Korea (1.10 kg/year), Italy (1.08 kg/year) and Turkey (0.78 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of chestnut was estimated at 0.13 kg/year in 2015.

In Italy, per capita chestnut consumption has grown noticably (+6.8% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Italy per capita consumption reached 8.33 kg/year as compared with 0.64 kg/year in 2007.
