Adipic Acid Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2023
The average adipic acid import price stood at $1,445 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 11% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,071 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($2,108 per ton), while the price for China amounted to $1,388 per ton.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Adipic Acid Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average adipic acid export price amounted to $4,955 per ton, surging by 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price posted a mild expansion. The export price peaked at $6,446 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($36,857 per ton), while the average price for exports to Tanzania ($3,049 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+18.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Adipic Acid Imports in South Africa
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of adipic acid, its salts and esters decreased by -28.3% to 1.4K tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2K tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, adipic acid imports declined to $2.7M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last three years.
