Asparagus Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average asparagus import price amounted to $3,310 per ton, rising by 11% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% month-to-month. The import price peaked in August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Peru ($4,297 per ton), while the price for Mexico totaled $2,302 per ton.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+2.2%).
Asparagus Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average asparagus export price amounted to $5,456 per ton, surging by 6.6% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, asparagus export price increased by +106.5% against March 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 when the average export price increased by 48% against the previous month. The export price peaked in August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($6,466 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($2,204 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ireland (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Asparagus Imports in the United States
In 2022, overseas purchases of asparagus decreased by -12.8% to 263K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 302K tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, asparagus imports fell to $620M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 6.2% against the previous year.
