Banana and Plantain Price in China (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $619 per ton, picking up by 3.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average import price increased by 4.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $673 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to September 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Cambodia ($693 per ton) and the Philippines ($615 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($530 per ton) and Ecuador ($608 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana and Plantain Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average banana and plantain export price amounted to $995 per ton, shrinking by -10.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 38% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,369 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Russia ($787 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia totaled $418 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mongolia (-0.4%).
Banana and Plantain Imports in China
In 2022, approx. 1.8M tons of bananas and plantains were imported into China; which is down by -2.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 5.5% against the previous year.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports rose notably to $1.2B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
