Banana Price in Italy (CIF) - 2023
The average banana import price stood at $750 per ton in October 2023, dropping by -3.7% against the previous month. Over the period from October 2022 to October 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2023 an increase of 9.2% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $807 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to October 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Peru ($1,113 per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($600 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana Price in Italy (FOB) - 2023
The average banana export price stood at $1,911 per ton in October 2023, growing by 110% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded prominent growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Kosovo.
From October 2022 to October 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Spain amounted to +2.8% per month.
Banana Imports in Italy
In 2022, supplies from abroad of bananas decreased by -4% to 740K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 5.5%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 771K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana imports declined slightly to $496M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 0.6%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $504M, and then declined in the following year.

Banana Exports in Italy
In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas decreased by -12.5% to 88K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 100K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, banana exports reduced to $75M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $80M, and then dropped in the following year.
