World Consumption of Barytes

In 2022, approx. 12M tons of barytes were consumed worldwide; dropping by -6% on 2021 figures. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global consumption peaked at 13M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The global baryte market value shrank remarkably to $4B in 2022, falling by -20.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global market attained the maximum level at $5.4B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Consumption By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of consumption in 2022 were Croatia (2.6M tons), the United States (2.2M tons) and China (2M tons), with a combined 57% share of global consumption. Kazakhstan, Iran, Mexico, Ukraine, Russia and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of consumption, amongst the main consuming countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +28.8%), while consumption for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($1.7B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($281M). It was followed by China.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Croatia amounted to +2.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (-0.3% per year) and China (+4.5% per year).

In 2022, the highest levels of baryte per capita consumption was registered in Croatia (647 kg per person), followed by Kazakhstan (28 kg per person), Ukraine (6.6 kg per person) and the United States (6.5 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of baryte was estimated at 1.5 kg per person.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the baryte per capita consumption in Croatia totaled +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+0.1% per year) and Ukraine (+15.2% per year).

Production

World Production of Barytes

In 2022, production of barytes increased by 0.7% to 13M tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, baryte production dropped to $5.1B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 83%. Global production peaked at $15.4B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (2.7M tons), Croatia (2.6M tons) and India (2.5M tons), with a combined 59% share of global production. Morocco, Kazakhstan, Iran, Mexico, the United States, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Ukraine and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +29.0%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Barytes

In 2022, approx. 4.6M tons of barytes were imported worldwide; increasing by 7.1% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 24%. Global imports peaked at 5.9M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, baryte imports soared to $743M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Global imports peaked at $976M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

The United States represented the largest importer of barytes in the world, with the volume of imports recording 1.9M tons, which was near 41% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (272K tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (222K tons). All these countries together held approx. 11% share of total imports. Italy (126K tons), the United Arab Emirates (123K tons), Malaysia (111K tons), Thailand (111K tons), Canada (110K tons), Kuwait (108K tons), Oman (101K tons), Norway (101K tons), Russia (97K tons) and Indonesia (90K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Argentina (+37.9%), Canada (+27.2%), Russia (+12.0%), Italy (+6.1%), Oman (+5.0%) and the Netherlands (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2012-2022. Kuwait and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United Arab Emirates (-1.2%), Norway (-2.1%), Malaysia (-2.2%) and Indonesia (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+10 p.p.), Argentina (+4.7 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.6 p.p.), Canada (+2.2 p.p.) and Russia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($214M) constitutes the largest market for imported barytes worldwide, comprising 29% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($63M), with an 8.4% share of global imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 4.9% share.

In the United States, baryte imports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+8.3% per year) and Argentina (+32.4% per year).

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average baryte import price amounted to $162 per ton, with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $228 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($284 per ton), while Thailand ($60 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Barytes

In 2022, shipments abroad of barytes increased by 25% to 5.9M tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 6.6M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, baryte exports soared to $787M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $978M in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

In 2022, India (2.5M tons) represented the main exporter of barytes, making up 43% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (1,177K tons) and China (733K tons), together constituting a 33% share of total exports. Turkey (252K tons), the Netherlands (208K tons), Kazakhstan (195K tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (195K tons) and the United States (93K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+49.6%), the Netherlands (+8.4%), Turkey (+4.8%), Kazakhstan (+3.8%) and Morocco (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United States (-7.7%) and China (-13.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Morocco, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Netherlands and Turkey increased by +20, +4.8, +3.3, +2.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($211M), China ($133M) and Morocco ($116M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 58% share of global exports. The Netherlands, Turkey, Kazakhstan, the United States and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +34.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average baryte export price stood at $134 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 11%. The global export price peaked at $177 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($278 per ton), while India ($85 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.3%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
