Bovine Animals; Live Price in Germany (FOB) - 2023

The average bovine animals; live export price stood at $1,399 per unit in August 2023, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 15% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,477 per unit in July 2023, and then contracted in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($1,616 per unit), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($1,074 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average bovine animals; live import price stood at $1,419 per unit in July 2023, waning by -1.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,519 per unit in January 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to July 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1,738 per unit), while the price for France ($1,149 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of bovine animals; lives increased by 49% to 696K units in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 823K units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bovine animals; live exports declined sharply to $220M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -1.4% was in 2021. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $344M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Bovine Animals; Live Imports in Germany

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of bovine animals; lives decreased by -1.5% to 46K units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 46K units, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, bovine animals; live imports totaled $62M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 41%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
