The average brown rice import price stood at $1,089 per ton in May 2023, surging by 7.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 63% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,123 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to May 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,227 per ton), while the price for Italy ($923 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average brown rice export price stood at $2,171 per ton in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, brown rice export price decreased by -2.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $2,226 per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($2,849 per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($1,571 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+67.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
