Butter Price in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average butter export price amounted to $5,585 per ton, almost unchanged from the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 2.1% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $6,799 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($5,597 per ton) and Belgium ($5,592 per ton), while the average price for exports to Morocco ($5,069 per ton) and France ($5,350 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Butter Price in the Netherlands (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average butter import price amounted to $4,638 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 an increase of 7.9% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $5,918 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($6,617 per ton), while the price for Germany ($3,368 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Butter Exports in the Netherlands
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of butter decreased by -5% to 258K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 8% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 272K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, butter exports skyrocketed to $1.6B in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +58.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
