Caramel Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
The average caramel export price stood at $3,602 per ton in July 2023, waning by -19.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 26% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $5,333 per ton. From September 2022 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($12,987 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($1,930 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average caramel import price stood at $2,872 per ton in July 2023, reducing by -26.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, caramel import price decreased by -26.7% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 52% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,919 per ton in June 2023, and then declined significantly in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($4,397 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($901 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Exports in Japan
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of caramel, when their volume decreased by -5% to 3.8K tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 4K tons, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, caramel exports fell modestly to $15M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 7.8%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $16M, and then fell in the following year.

Caramel Imports in Japan
