Caramel Price in Spain (CIF) - 2023
The average caramel import price stood at $1,862 per ton in June 2023, dropping by -13.7% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 21% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,158 per ton, and then dropped in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2,996 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($1,063 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Price in Spain (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average caramel export price amounted to $1,777 per ton, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 29%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($3,855 per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($1,091 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Costa Rica (+41.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Caramel Imports in Spain
For the fourth year in a row, Spain recorded growth in overseas purchases of caramel, which increased by 3.6% to 36K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, caramel imports soared to $62M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a significant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Caramel Exports in Spain
In 2022, overseas shipments of caramel decreased by -4.6% to 10K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 15K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, caramel exports skyrocketed to $18M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
